At Gatesville High School, student athletic trainers play an essential role in supporting the school's athletic programs. Each year, students apply for the position and begin their training in early August, right before the start of the fall sports season. Their training kicks off with an in-depth focus on first aid, CPR, AED use, basic taping techniques, and nutrition, ensuring that they are well-equipped to handle the demands of the job. As part of their initial experience, the student trainers work closely with the football team, attending every practice and game, including all junior varsity contests. This immersive involvement during football fall camp helps them develop the skills and confidence they need in real-time situations, making them valuable members of the athletic department.
Once the football season concludes, the student trainers expand their experience by supporting other sports teams throughout the school year. They are assigned to various athletic programs, including wrestling, soccer, and track, where they continue to apply their knowledge and refine their skills. Whether it’s assisting with injury prevention, recovery, or ensuring athletes stay healthy and hydrated, the trainers are always present on the sidelines, providing support across different disciplines. The hands-on training they receive throughout the year not only aids the athletes but also offers a unique educational experience for the students, preparing them for potential careers in sports medicine or related fields.
